Getting to Granada & Melegís

Flights on budget airlines tend to fill up quickly in the high season especially on 'change-over days for holiday rental

The Granada area is served by 2 airports:

Malaga is the main regional airport with connections to the majority of European airports.  Most of the budget airlines have flights to Malaga. Hint: if there are several people traveling and you cannot get on the same flight, you can try splitting between 2 flights that are only an hour apart.

Granada has connections to UK regional airports, including London Stanstead), Madrid, Barcelona and Palma.

Useful Web Pages:  The 'Useful Links' page (main menu on this page) contains links to web pages for airlines serving Malaga & Granada, as well as for local hire car companies

Car Hire

Malaga airport has the largest number of car hire firms that we have seen anywhere.  Rates are very good, but it can take a while to wait for your car.    If possible, book your car before you travel.

Granada airport has the well known car hire firms (Avis, Europcar) as well as Crown which is by far the largest in this region.  Cars should be booked in advance.  Crown have a courtesy bus that connects to their compound adjacent to the airport.  In the Summer, it is better for the driver to go and get the car, leaving the family to have a coffee in the airport.  Waiting in the Crown compound in the sun can be stressful for children after a long journey!

Hire cars tend to be nearly new and in good condition. Make sure you check out the bodywork before accepting it.  Also, make sure you have all the mirrors and controls set up before setting off.  In Spain, you are supposed to put your lights on during the day in tunnels - & turn them off after exiting the tunnel.

Keep the fuel tank full.  Carry cash, as some petrol stations do not accept credit cards.

Travel from Airport to Melegís & the Lecrin Valley

You can get from the airport to Melegís by public transport.  Bus from airport to Malaga, get the Granada bus and then the village bus to Lecrin and Melegís.  A fair trek and takes all day and not recommended.

ViaSur (our agents) can arrange for a car/taxi to collect, but this can be expensive. The best bet is a hire car even if you do not use it much while there.

The journey from Malaga airport to Casa Larga takes about 2 hours.  Granada airport to Melegís takes around 45 minutes.

Carrefour in Granada is a short detour off the Granada Southern ring road; shopping for meals etc can be done quite quickly before getting to Melegís.

Full instructions on the journey are provided on booking.
